Day 3 - France and the Black Forest

After more than 14 hours (!) of refreshing sleep, I woke to find that it was still raining!  Grrrrrr.  Apparently when used in Europe, the Weather Channel app uses the terms "slight chance of showers" and "mostly cloudy" to mean steady rain all day. <sigh>

But rain can't dampen my spirit!  Just my clothes and hair. So glad I brought an umbrella. Anyway, after a fine free breakfast, I jumped in the car and headed west, rather than to where I had tentatively planned to go. I wanted to go to Strasbourg, France anyway, so because the Weather Channel told me it wasn't raining there, off I went.  Of course, pursuant to the apparent European rules which I didn't yet fully appreciate, it was in fact raining in Strasbourg and all points west of Heidelberg that I thought would be dry. Oh, I also skipped the touristy part of H-berg but it's very close to Frankfurt so I hope to hit it on my way back to the airport. Despite the rain, Strasbourg was worth the trip. I wandered around Petite France taking rainy pictures, had a giant meat plate for lunch, and decided to take the scenic Black Forest Road to Freiburg (because it wasn't going to rain there...).

The road was very curvy and mountainous and also fairly scenic despite the rain and mountaintop fog. I'm sure it would have been much prettier on a sunny day but I wasn't disappointed. It kinda reminded me of the Mohawk Trail, but with a bigger mountain and a plethora of hairpin turns.

I ended the day at the Goldener Adler Gasthaus, a charming little place I can't wait to see in the daylight (dare I hope for actual sunshine?). My room is super cute and I am happy to have made it through check-in even though the girl at the desk didn't speak English and I, of course, don't speak German (don't speak French either but the staff at the tourist-trap restaurant in Strasbourg acted as if it was the first time an English speaker ever entered the establishment.  Oh France, how I had hoped to go home able to tell everyone that your people aren't rude...).  We got through it.

Looks like tomorrow I may stay in Southern Germany and maybe pop into Switzerland. Plans are fluid based on weather...even though I have little reason to believe whatever weather information I may get. If the sun is out in the morning, I'm going to assume it will stay out for at least a little while so I can see some Alps and a waterfall and maybe even take a bit of a hike. Fingers crossed!
