I'm making my way to Northern Ireland, but there's no rush and lots to see along the way, so today there was no destination in particular. My first stop was Drumcliff - site of Yeats's grave, a High Cross, and round tower. There was also a lovely little path along the river and a tea room that provided me with a much-needed coffee and an apple danish with fresh whipped cream - yum! It made me glad I had accidentally slept too late in Sligo to get breakfast (some festivities in the hotel were a bit loud for sleeping purposes). This stop also babe me my first glimpse of Benbulben Mountain. Alas, I never got a nice sunny view of it, but it was still a nice view throughout much of the day. Stop number two was Lissadell House, recently visited by Charles and Camilla. The house was nice enough, but I got to see the garden Charles didn't have time for. It was pretty great. Lots of pretty flowers by the water. On the Prince Charles theme, I next visited the little fishing village where his great uncle was blown up by the IRS, Mullaghmore. It wasn't as cute as I expected but there was a pretty cliff and I had a nice lunch. My final stop was just south of Donegal at the Sand House Hotel, whose generous provision of wifi is making this blog post possible. A long walk on the (windy and, sadly, too cloudy) beach, followed by a rejuvenating shower and a salad with too much dressing rounded out the day. Oh, almost forgot! I drove through a tiny village named Carney today. Yay Carneys! :)
